Holly Springs is a growing town and with growth comes many dangers such as accidents involving hazardous materials. If there is a danger to the public there will be instructions from the town administrators to the media informing the public. The town of Holly Springs is in the ten mile radius of Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP). SHNPP is a single nuclear reactor which produces 900 MWe of power. SHNPP also has stored spent fuel rods on site in a protective area. SHNPP is governed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The NRC has required SHNPP to install sirens every quarter mile within a 10 mile radius around the plant. The sirens are designed to alert the public of a possible event at SHNPP. If an event occurs the sirens will activate and the Emergency Broadcast System and media outlets will advise the public of the danger and provide instructions on what to do. The evacuation routes are clearly marked with a blue evacuation route sign; follow these signs to a designated safe evacuation center in the safe zone. If an event occurs during school hours the school system and surrounding towns and counties have evacuation procedures to keep students out of arms way and transport them to a safety area outside the 10 mile radius. In the event of a release emergency management has adequate supply of Potassium Iodide which is a radiation blocker for thyroid glands. If this event occurs, emergency management will use the media outlets to provide information concerning where potassium Iodide will be made available to the public.
